I pieced this quilt from one of the sampler blocks for my book Facts & Fabrications: Unraveling the History of Quilts & Slavery. It's pictured on page 48.
I used fabrics with a hand-painted look to create a stormy world with warm centers reflecting family life, a metaphor for the life of the slave.
