Barbara updated an old Aunt Martha pattern from the 1930s. Aunt Martha recommended white backgrounds with shades of pastel for her checkerboard fans, but Jean and Barbara selected prints with a more sophisticated grayed color scheme and a black background for tradition with a modern look.
This quilt is the model for the pattern on page 51 of Barbara's book Women of Design: Quilts in the Newspaper.
