Climbing Jacob's Ladder

Climbing Jacob's Ladder , pieced and appliqued by Jean Stanclift, machine quilted by Lori Kukuk. 47" x 47".

Jean pieced and machine appliqued this quilt from my design, setting 5 blocks on point and appliquéing the floral over the intersections where the blocks meet. This is a project in my book Facts & Fabrications: Unraveling the History of Quilts & Slavery. It's pictured on page 64.

The flower is an original design, drawn from the wildflower named Jacob's Ladder, a member of the phlox family. The pieced design is also traditionally called Jacob's Ladder. I used both to symbolize the story of slaves working to buy their freedom.
