Star of Africa

Star of Africa by Barbara Brackman, machine quilted by Pamela Mayfield. 37" x 37".

I pieced this small quilt of ethnic-style fabrics from various cultures combining indigo blues and madder browns. I fussy cut the starpoints. This is a project in my book Facts & Fabrications: Unraveling the History of Quilts & Slavery. It's pictured on page 31.

The block is traditionally called Chained Star and I thought it the perfect symbol for African slavery.
